WHAT IS TRE®?
The Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercise (TRE®) is a somatic (body-based) practice to release stored tension from the body. It consists of a simple series of exercises that assist the body in releasing deep muscular patterns of stress, tension, and trauma. Working with the body’s innate wisdom and reorganizing principles, the practice brings a sense of ease and well-being.
Created by Dr. David Berceli, PhD, TRE safely activates a natural reflex mechanism of shaking or vibrating that releases muscular tension, calming down the nervous system. When this muscular shaking/vibrating mechanism is activated in a safe environment, the body is encouraged to return back to a state of balance.
WHO IS IT FOR?
TRE can benefit everyone. Most people are walking around carrying quite a bit of tension. I have found it very beneficial as a personal practice, and it’s a great compliment to coaching and bodywork. It supports physical, emotional and relational health.
One of the beautiful things about this practice is that it supports you being in choice over your body — learn to notice and follow sensations in your body, modulate the tremoring based on your level of comfort, and take a break anytime. The exercises can be adapted to suit all bodies and circumstances. What I hear most at the end of a session is how relaxing and energizing it feels.
